Bonefish Bonsai!!

Report Date: January 8, 2004

It?s the dead of winter here in South Florida and things couldn?t have been better for me this week. On Tuesday, Tim Dearwester found himself in Biscayne Bay with crystal clear skies and not much wind. We?ve had an unusually warm winter so far, but today was the end of the warm spell. The cold front was coming, and the fish were hungry. We got a late start so we didn?t have much time. When we pulled up to the first spot, the bonefish were waiting. The first cast was made and Tim was on! He pulled the 6 lb. bone to the boat, we stuck a tag in him (the bonefish), and let him go. We hit the next spot and before we knew it, there were more bonefish. After a few attempts, Tim got another one to eat. Luckily he pulled it through the sea fans and to the boat. We had a couple more shots at the bones and a shot at some permit. When the sun hit the horizon we headed for the ramp. The sky was orange and the bay was flat. We wish we could have stayed.

Today was a little different. The wind was NE at about 17 knots and the Bay was a little choppy. The water was a little dirty because of a hard blow yesterday and the water temp. was about 6 degrees cooler. Adam, Ari, and Elli were fired up to fish, so we went. The sun was low and the water was dirty, so I put on the jigs and hit the channels. Adam came up with an 8 lb. bonefish right away. After that we tried and tried, but just couldn?t come up with much more. I decided to get out of the wind and get rid of the jigs. It turned out to be the right call. We pulled up on a flat and there they were. A half dozen bones. Adam threw his shrimp and came up with a 6 lber. So now he is 2 for 2 on the bones. Then the bonnet sharks showed up and Ari got one of those. Then Adam got one. While he pulled on the shark Ari put his shrimp out and hooked another bone. This one turned out to be 3 lbs. He got a tag and was on his way. When things slowed we moved across the flat to a little depression where there were some more bones. Adam cast and caught number 4. I was feeling bad because Elli hadn?t caught a fish all day. We went to a spot where the ladyfish are usually plentiful. Not today though. However, Elli finally got his, a nice pompano and a bluefish.

Good job guys and I can?t wait until tomorrow when the weather is supposed to be beautiful. I have my fingers crossed for another 4 bonefish day.
