Fall Is Here!

Dr. Vorstman's permit

Recently, I was making a point of how summer was over and fall had begun. I think my customers thought I was a nut. At that time of the day the temperature was already in the upper 80’s and expected to get just a hair warmer, not to mention the humidity. In the beginning, the changes are subtle, because it is primarily a celestial change. Then one day you’re out there, and it just feels like fall. With each passing, the full moon gets bigger and the tides get higher, with the sun angle noticeably retreating south for the winter. Now it is the middle of the third week in September and we are getting our first cold front. The mullet have made an appearance and more are on the way. It looks like Mother Nature is right on schedule.

Double header. Nice!

Since fall started, fishing in Biscayne Bay has been very good. With the higher tides and slightly cooler temperatures, there has been plenty of everything biting. In two days, Dr. Vorstman caught 3 tarpon, 2 bonefish, a permit and a snook. Actually, that was the good luck. The bad luck was that we lost 2 bonefish, 2 permit and a tarpon, which cost us a super slam on the second day. However, we did manage the bonefish, tarpon, snook slam out of all that.

Nice bone for Andy

A couple days later, Andy Novack and Josh Brown had a great day fishing Biscayne Bay. They had lots of shots at bonefish, catching seven. After several shots at permit with no bite we hurried to a tarpon spot to jump two 20 lbers. The double slam seemed so close.

Josh lets one go.

Fall can be an exiting time of the year to fish in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Biscayne Bay will be good for big bonefish, permit and tarpon, while the beaches and the inlets at Fort Lauderdale and Miami will hold tarpon and snook. The bait is solid on the beaches and everybody is waiting for a meal, including sharks of different species. I fishing the beach tomorrow morning.
