Fish, Women and Cards
You know what they say about fish, women and cards? When they will they will and when they won?t they won?t. Well that has been very true of the tarpon so far this season. As with the weather it has been hot and cold.
Just when you think you are all dialed in, something changes and you are on the wild goose chase. Maybe the last two years were more the exception than the rule. It?s hard to say. Most everyone (other guides) seems to have a different story. I?m sticking to mine. It?s the weather.
From what I can remember the last two years the weather was, for south Florida, a little on the cold side from about the middle of December until the end of January. Then February rolled around and it was beautiful until the beginning of April. I mean, every day was a high of 80 deg or so and the low was in the upper 60?s or low 70?s. Some of the nicest winters I can remember.
This year has been a different story. We have a real cold front blow through and freeze us out and the next couple days would warm right back up to 80. The water temps would fluctuate from the upper 60?s to 78 deg or so. I think it keeps the tarpon all spread out. They have not really gotten into a good pattern yet. I even found the tarpon in a spot where they really don?t show until about the end of April and in a spot I haven?t seen them in two years. I have my fingers crossed that yesterday was the last of the days in the 50?s. I?m getting tired of the cold too.
Don?t get me wrong. It?s not like we haven?t been catching them. It just has not been very consistent. It wasn?t just the coldest days that were the worst. Some of the days I really thought we would get a good bite just didn?t come through. With the weather forecast for the next week, although, a little breezy I think things will turn around and the bite will be on. Maybe April will even be better then it was the last few years. Either way I will be out there giving it hell trying.
