Let's Go Jump A Poon

Report Date: February 14, 2005

Last Monday started a bit of a warming trend and things were looking up when the tarpon stared biting Tuesday afternoon. I had a last minute trip down to the bay and the guy wanted to catch a tarpon. Good timing not so good luck. We hooked 3 and one broke off and the others fell off the hook.

Wednesday was nearly picture perfect and the mission was to catch sharks. We caught plenty of ladyfish and bluefish for bait. The shark fishing was frustrating. We saw plenty but only got a few to eat. Mixed in with a little bad luck and we wound up only catching one lemon shark that was about 100 lbs
.
Thursday was another nice day. My customer wanted to catch a tarpon on a fly. The tarpon were rolling but not exactly remaining near the surface. All we could do was get close and blind cast for them. It finally worked. He hooked one and got a big jump before the loop knot of the leader broke. We tried a little bonefishing and only found a few so I guess he was itching for the tarpon and we went back. The wind picked up, but the fish were there, but no bite on either the bait or fly.

Gene with his 100+ lbs tarpon.

We had our last big cold front come through last Thursday night. It was very strong with winds out of the northwest at 31 kts. at 5 am Friday morning. The temperature went down to about 46 in my carport. The winds died quickly and the sun was out. Saturday morning the temperature was down to 44 and the wind at Fowey Light was NNW at 19 kts. Not my favorite weather pattern. I knew it would be tough and it was. Enzo through the fly and Gene was drifting crabs. Gene got one over 100lbs on the 14# spinner. That was some fight and took a long time to get to the boat.

Notice the low angle of the rod for stopping power.

Sunday Enzo and Gene were back for more punishment. The first tarpon Gene caught, on the 20# rod this time, and got it to the boat in less than 30 mins. Enzo finished off strong by catching another tarpon on the fly. Both fish were over 100# and provided great photos. We fished the bluefish hole and did great. The bones were slow at the one spot we tried, but the little sharks were there and we through baits at them for a while.

Enzo put the hurting on another one over 100#

It turned out to be a decent week of fishing. We are looking at a bunch of nice days in the next week and maybe two. I really think the tarpon fishing will turn on and I can?t wait to be out there tomorrow.
