Latest Poon Report

Latest Poon Report

Tarpon fishing has been very spotty for the last two weeks. It?s has not been for the lack of trying. The weather has been tough still. The cold fronts seem to be making it through just about every week. The wind was howling on several days. The water temps go down and the tarpon disappear. The nicest days were the ones that produced.

It looks like the weather pattern has finally changed, with the fronts not making it all the way through S. Florida. This should get the temps up and the tarpon biting. With all the wind this year, I look forward to having a nice calm May. I hope.

The bones and the permit have been around pretty good lately. Their numbers should increase as we head into late spring. It is a good time to go for the slam.

That's a big one for a little kid.

Since my last report Eric Bannerot landed his first tarpon of about 80 lbs. For being a first timer and only about 100 lbs himself, Eric put the pressure on the fish and landed it in about 20 mins. That was it for the tarpon bite that day, but the ladyfish and the sharks kept Eric and Courtney busy for the rest of the day. Dad was happy just watching the commotion.

The next day Rick Bannerot took his brother-in-law Craig fishing. We chased some bonefish and had no luck. Craig hooked a tarpon at the end of the day and got it close to the boat before pulling the hook. The tarpon were around in the morning but just would not eat our bait.

Hold on Login

Mark and Hillary Jackson took their nephew Login to the bay and did great. Login got his first tarpon of about 80 lbs, Mark got another that was maybe just a little bigger and Hillary had one on for about 30 seconds. She lost it on the jump, but I don?t think she really wanted to bring that fish all the way to the boat.

Mark caught this one for Hillary

Mark and Hillary gave it another shot the next day. The weather was good the tarpon were rolling and we could not get a bite from them. That?s a tarpon for you. We didn?t waist much time with the tarpon and ran down the permit spot. Mark got two permits to eat. They were each about 15 lbs. Nice job on the presentation Mark.

Larry Seidler and John Fletcher fished with me last week. Wed night we got some mullet and fished the Gov?t Cut area. It was a treat to see the tarpon crashing the bait. The bust they make trying to eat the mullet is just amazing. We had several bites, hooked two and lost them. It must have been the circle hooks.

Nice fish John

John Fletcher went by himself early the next day and was rewarded for his patience throughout to week. He landed a nice 100 lb. tarpon. The only bite of the day.

Even though the tarpon fishing has been a little tough, it is a beautiful day out and I am sitting here writing this report wishing I was there. Tomorrow, I fish.
