It's a Happy New Year

Report Date: January 3, 2006

It?s a Happy New Year

It is, when you end the old year by catching tarpon in your long johns, and begin the New Year by releasing bonefish wishing you were in shorts.

NICE fish Heather

I started out the week last Tuesday night fishing in Lauderdale for tarpon. Every night through Sunday we caught 2 to 7 tarpon and lost several others. It got so good that I put the live bait away and started fishing with lures. The weather has been perfect. Light wind out of the west and a little chilly. Katie Walker and her father were 2 for 3 on tarpon from 50 to 80 lbs. Todd Blanchard caught 2 tarpon and Jim Dearwester one tarpon about 70 lbs Wednesday night. Thursday Daniel and wife Lisha caught 5 tarpon from 20 to 100 lbs. Friday Jack Field and Bill Wiest each caught 2 or 3 and lost several others. Saturday Heather caught a nice 70-80 lbs. tarpon. Sunday I took my friend Pavlo and we caught 2 or 3 using different lures.

Jack Murray with a Bull Shark

Biscayne Bay was real fishy as well. Mostly it was family week with fathers and there sons. We did the bluefish, ladyfish and shark thing. It was very product. The ladies and blues ate the top water plugs and jigs. We could have gotten them on fly very easily. We caught a 70 lb. Black tip shark, 100 lb. bull shark, and 2 100 lb or so lemon sharks. Also, yesterday we caught 3 bonefish from 5 to 7 lb.

Laura's first Bonefish

The New Year is looking good as the tarpon bite should be good until it gets better in February when it warms a little. Bonefish and permit will be in the bay much better starting in February too. The ladyfish/ bluefish/ shark deal will be available through April. Lauderdale will have its share of good nights for tarpon through the end of March.
