South Florida Summer
Report Date: July 8, 2004
South Florida Summer
I was checking out the current weather conditions at Fowey Light, which is just off Biscayne Bay on the edge of the Gulfstream, and was surprised to see the high temperature for yesterday. It was 85.5 deg. at 2 pm. The news station in the car was saying it was 93 deg. at 4 pm in town. I couldn?t believe it. What a difference. To some that may not seem like much but I?ll bet the lawn man would take it. I know I?m loving it.

That was a great cast!

Despite the seemingly hot temperatures the fishing has been good. I have been finding a lot of bonefish and permit. Yesterday we had some shots at the baby tarpon.
Larry Walker fulfilled his goal of catching a bonefish on fly with a nice 9 lbr. Early that day bad luck struck when the hook pulled on a permit.
Later that same day Darrel Forte and friend caught 4 bonefish. The bite was on!

Darrel got this one on a crab

Collins Forman took his kids out for two days. The first day we did the sight fish thing. We had lots of shot and Tim caught a 12# permit. The second day we took the little guys. We netted a bunch of chum baits and got the barracudas eating like crazy. Then we went to the shark spot. We saw a bunch of them but could only get 1- 100# or so bull shark to take the bait.

It's time to get one on the fly Tim

Chris and Jonathan found out how hard it is to cast accurately. Luckily Chris got the crab in front of a 20# permit. That happened right after the captain missed a bonefish bite. Good spotting boys.
Yesterday I took my buddy Pavlo to the Bay. He is one of those hook a chunk of ladyfish on, cast it out, put the rod in the holder, stretch out under the bimini top and drink a beer guys. This guy claims to be a fisherman. He missed a bunch of shots at baby tarpon. Oh, had one finally eat the lure and he pulled the hook. Not to mention the permit and the bonefish that he blew. Finally, he got a shrimp in front of a 9 lb. bonefish. I, on the other hand, caught 2 bonefish casting around him. It was a great day of fishing and it was nice to get out with a friend even if he can?t cast.

It?s summer in South Florida, hot and fishy. It?s still a good time to get out on the water and cool off a little.
