Tarpon Time Again

Report Date: February 7, 2005

Fishing Report #1

There is just too much to cover in one report this time. That?s because this is my first report of the year. The weather over all has been great, a little chilly here and there but nothing out of control. The first part of January was on the warm side and I think it keep the tarpon from moving into a little secret hole I know of. The fishing up the river wasn?t bad for Jan. The beach was real good.

Mike Monaco caught a nice 125 lb tarpon up the river one night. That was the first big girl of the year for me. We had some other shots but only got one other fish on for only a couple seconds.

Tim and Judy took trip to the bay and crushed some big jacks on the top water plugs. I don?t care who you are that is always a good time. Then we went to do a little bonefishing. Well wouldn?t you know it, Judy got her a bonefish right out from under Tim. Women should avoid this, ego?s get hurt sometimes. Not that yours was Tim. Good catch Judy. Thanks for making me look good.

The ladyfish and bluefish moved into there spot for the winter and have been doing real well on them. We have been getting some good shark action with the ladies and blues as bait. They should be around for a few months and hopefully through the summer.

Scosh and tarpon

Joe Irpino and Scosh went 2 for 5 in Lauderdale one evening on the tarpon. That was one of those nights I thought was going to be slow. Sometimes I?m wrong.

Joe Edgett and wife Cheryl caught some nice jacks up the river and later Joe caught a nice tarpon fishing the inlet. That tarpon was about 100 lbs and we had a couple others on.

Stan and Karen with nice jacks

The next night Stan and Karen Pigman had a very similar trip but a little more luck. We caught jacks up the river and bluefish on the beach. The blues we got on top water plugs. Great action! Then after dark we went for the Poons and were 2 for 3. Karen got on that was close to 100 and Stan got a little 40 lber.

Bill Boyle and son Tim have a great day in the bay. We bone fished, and even though the water temp was about 62, we managed to find a bunch. We got 4 all together and pulled the hook on one.

Conner and Colton and big lemon shark

Judy Richarson took her boys, Conner and Colton, out of school one day. They wore their arms out on the ladyfish and bluefish. We kept a few of those and did the shark thing. They each caught lemon sharks in the 150 lb range. We made a few drift for tarpon first thing but no bites. They were there.

Bob Olufs got a tarpon one night of about 75 lb. We had a double header for a minute but mine got off. It jumped like five times in one spot in less than 5 seconds before the hook pulled. Nice job Bob.
Last Friday night was a chilly one but we still managed to come up with a 75 lb poon for Mike Kennedy. We put our time in for that one.

Saturday night Sam Paige got a tarpon of about 125 lb fishing the river. Slow bite otherwise. We missed one other tarpon and caught a hand full of nice Jacks.

This week is looking good for the weather to warm just a hair. This should really get those tarpon going. I also saw some permit on a cold day, so they should be getting better. The bones seem to be around pretty good and should get better. I have been seeing them almost every trip I look for them. Going shark fishing tomorrow and Wed. The lemons have been around good. I almost forgot my sister and her daughter and friend caught two big lemon sharks yesterday. The girls just loved it. Until next time, hope you get to bend a rod.
