Winter Bones and Tarpon

Report Date: January 1, 2004

Michelle with her first tapron

It?s been a warmer than usual winter down here in South Florida. Don?t get my wrong, it?s been really nice. We have had some days down in Biscayne Bay when the water temp actually reached the 78 degree mark. The same has been true in Lauderdale. It has been interesting to me to see how it has affected the fish in both locations.

The tarpon bite in Lauderdale has been a little slower than the last couple years. I have had to change my strategy and work a little harder to find the fish. This week, however, has been cooler with night time temps below 70 deg. I think, the cooler weather combine with the outgoing tide, fishing will improve this next week.

The Bay, on the other hand, has been good. The bonefish seem to love the slightly warmer than usual weather. I have been seeing good numbers of them. Even though the water in the Bay was about 68 deg. yesterday, I managed to find good numbers of them again. We had about a dozen shots at them in the afternoon. My customer found that fly fishing for bonefish, with very little experience, in much more difficult than he imagined.

I am anxious to see how thing progress in the days to come. Maybe the February tarpon bite in Lauderdale and Miami will be will be early. Maybe, the coldest weather is yet to come. As for the bonefish, I think the warmer days will be the best, but the cooler days will still produce.

In any case, tarpon fishing in Miami and Lauderdale has been outstanding in February and March. Those are the two months of the year I look forward to the most. I will keep my fingers crossed as those days are quickly being filled.
